A joint meeting of GENMEDA members (Network of Mediterranean Plant Conservation Centres) and CARE-MEDIFLORA project was organized in Rome on 18 May 2017.

According to its statute signed on 2010, GENMEDA is a “network of seed banks and conservation centres of genetic resources of the Mediterranean flora”, with “members who share a common floristic region, a geographical area with a similar landscape and a common set of problems concerning natural environment disruptions”.

The mission of the network is the conservation of the Mediterranean flora genetic resources; the main objectives of the network are as following:
1. To reinforce and enhance the effectiveness of flora conservation actions throughout : sharing of information and equipment, promoting training of technicians and researchers, adoption of common work methodologies, duplication of accessions, creation of a virtual common collection of vegetal genetic and reproduction materials, development of culture collections for the more threatened species in order to know their ex situ population dynamics, creation and development of joint communication tools
2. To promote and develop actions for environmental education and dissemination in order to increase the public awareness concerning biodiversity conservation.
3. To draw up of joint initiatives and projects enabling the progress of the scientific and technical knowledge on conservation and/or management of flora genetic resources.
4. To give support to the making-decision processes concerning vegetal biodiversity conservation policies in the Mediterranean region.

During the meeting in Rome, discussions were devoted to the GENMEDA network priorities and the collaboration with CARE-MEDIFLORA project (such as reconstruction of website and database, ideas for common future projects and expansion of the network with new members). During the meeting it was decided to enrich its current 13 members from 7 Mediterranean countries with 5 interested institutions as new associate members, 2 of which are CARE-MEDIFLORA partners.
